Fractional CMO
Experienced marketing leadership without hiring a full-time CMO.
Triumph B2B provides experienced CMOs who have led start-up and scale-up marketing teams across B2B industries, from technology and regulated markets to manufacturing.
The role is there to give marketing the level of leadership the business needs now. That can mean taking marketing away from the founder, giving an existing team stronger direction, or building a function that can support the next stage of growth.
What the role covers
- Marketing strategy and planning
- Team leadership, structure and hiring
- Budget ownership and spend prioritisation
- Positioning, proposition and messaging
- Demand generation and pipeline contribution
- Sales and marketing alignment
- Brand, agencies and specialist partners
- CRM, systems, data, reporting and practical use of AI
How it works
The work sits inside the business rather than outside it. I join the leadership rhythm, work with the commercial team and take responsibility for the marketing plan rather than handing over recommendations for somebody else to interpret.
Most engagements are one to three days a week. The exact amount depends on the size of the team, how much needs changing and how involved I need to be in delivery.
The first stage is usually a proper look at the market, pipeline, team, systems, spend and current activity. From there we agree the priorities, who owns what and how marketing will be measured.
When a fractional CMO makes sense
It is a good fit when the business has outgrown founder-led marketing, when a capable marketing team needs more senior leadership, or when you need CMO-level experience but a permanent hire would be too early or too expensive.
It can also be useful through a period of change: a new market, a new proposition, a restructure, or while you work out what the permanent marketing organisation should look like.
Common questions
Will you manage our existing team and agencies?
Where that is part of the brief, I can lead the internal team, manage agencies and suppliers, and bring in additional capability where there are gaps.
How long does an engagement last?
There is no fixed duration. It needs to be long enough to understand the business, put the plan into operation and leave the function stronger than it was at the start. We agree the intended outcomes before the work begins.
What happens when the engagement ends?
The strategy, systems, data, processes and reporting stay with the business. If the next step is a permanent marketing leader, I can also help define the role, recruit it and manage the handover.
